Why is it *still* so hard to find stylish plus-size ski wear? (2024)

I'm not sure if it's the winter sun, the pretty white snow, the altitude or the adrenaline, but there's something truly magical about skiing. So, when the opportunity arose for me to head to The Alps, I jumped at the chance. Finally, it was time to have my picture-perfect après moment... Until it dawned on me that I had no idea where the hell to begin when it came to finding stylish ski wear for for the trip.

Unlike my fellow fashion-loving friends, the opportunity to adorn my voluptuous body in a fab Chanel jumpsuit – like Melissa, from Melissa's Wardrobe – seemed far-fetched. One, because my bank balance would definitely not have appreciated a designer shopping spree. And two, because most of the ski-appropriate outfits I saw in size fat/curve/plus-size (feel free to pick your preferred adjective) were generally far from fashionable.

But every plus-size fashion dilemma is a challenge I'll happily take on – and so the hunt for genuinely chic and cool ski wear began. While there might not be as many glam designer looks as I'd like, I did find some chic and affordable pieces from brands like ASOS Curve and Ulla Popken that I'm going to share so that you, too, can feel fly AF on the slopes, whatever your size. All you'll have to worry about is your friends getting the perfect angles for the 'gram.

Where to shop *stylish* plus-size ski wear

Salopettes

Skiers regularly wear salopettes, which can make for an incredible fashion moment when styled correctly. So, I wanted to find some that would work for my curves but weren't too boring or basic. Unsurprisingly, brands offer an array of prints, colours and styles in their core range but seriously neglect to make the same effort for their curve range.

This means that trying to find salopettes available beyond a size 22 was borderline impossible. While this experience isn't new for me, it is saddening. Thankfully, after trawling through the internet, I found four fab plus-size salopettes worth sharing. They may not be the most super trend-driven, but they certainly warrant a mini photoshoot on the slopes.

Snowsuits

While snowsuits were much easier to come by, with a handful of brands offering styles in sizes 18 to 26, I still found it rather difficult to find the perfect one for my taste and body.

The vast majority of the styles available are typically neutral or dark, which doesn't necessarily provide the level of joy I look for as a die-hard dopamine dresser. However, I *did* manage to hunt down a fab little pink number as well as some cool monochrome pieces that are sure to look chic AF.

Ski trousers

In my hours spent looking for ski wear, I came across a great plus-size fashion brand called Ulla Popken that offers an array of outfits for the slopes. Unlike many other brands, Ulla Popken has enough colours, prints and styles to satisfy a fashion girlie like me – and within that collection, there are some seriously good ski trousers too.

Now, while I'd like to say "mission complete", looking for plus-size friendly ski wear still left me feeling a little disheartened. It's mind-boggling that the industry hasn't widely recognised the existence of plus-size people – hello, we are here, living and thriving! – and it's even more frustrating that these moments often leave us feeling isolated.

An experience that's supposed to be fun is turned into a "challenge" because the appropriate clothing isn't readily available. But does that mean we shouldn't get to enjoy a getaway as much as our straight-size friends? Absolutely not.

And there's reassurance in knowing that there are hundreds of plus-size babes out there sharing their stylish ski moments over on Instagram under the hashtag #plussizeski. So let's continue to celebrate each other and push for more size inclusivity – because we all deserve to feel fabulous, whether we're at the local lido, running errands around town or carving up the slopes like a total boss.
