WYLIE — Wylie East is the true definition of a team that “comes ready to play.” For the third straight week, East came out with a big first quarter and went on to a dominating District 9-6A victory.

This one came against their crosstown rivals. East jumped out to a 28-3 lead in the first quarter and now have a three-game winning streak after a 66-10 victory over Wylie on Friday night. East has outscored opponents a combined 70-3 in the first quarter the past three games.

“I told the guys afterward … I’m speechless, I’m proud,” East coach Marcus Gold said. “That’s a really good football team. We executed well and came out with unbelievable energy and kept that energy the entire time. It shows on the scoreboard.”

This game was shockingly different than last year when East pulled out a 26-19 victory in the final seconds to win the district title. East (4-1 in 9-6A, 6-1 overall) and Wylie (4-1, 5-2) are now tied for second in district behind Sachse, which is 5-0 in 9-6A.

East quarterback Howard Fisher had another big night, hitting 15 of 19 for 244 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 72 yards and one touchdown as East racked up 510 yards total offense.

“Our O-line really helped us this game,” Fisher said. “The skill position players did really good but the O-line, they carried us this game.”

Wylie managed just 99 yards against an East defense led by linemen James Cano, Jayden Janshego and Keith Robinson, and the linebacking trio of Rome Jeffers, Sean Berry and Zachari Loftus. Wylie came into the night averaging 408 yards per game on offense.

“We expect this,” Loftus said. “We know who we are as a defense. We came in and showed them this is our house. We all feel good. We all feel this is where we need to be. Just keep pushing, keep grinding. This is a good position to be in, it was a really great win.”

Big plays on defense and special teams — including a daring onside kick — really allowed East to break this one open early after Wylie looked like the team poised for a quick start on its first possession.

“This feels great,” Robinson said. “I’m enjoying this. This is my senior year, so I’m happy to win against them one last time. I feel we can go all the way if we just stay determined and continue to do what we do.”

Wylie had the ball on its own 25 on its first possession and running back Josh Ausborne broke through the East defense for a big one. Ausborne appeared on his way to the end zone but East safety Kory Boyd ran him down at the 3-yard line.

“I’ll admit this, I thought they scored,” Gold said. “When they lined back up, I thought they were going for two. What an unbelievable effort by Kory Boyd to run him down and give us the opportunity to make a goal line stand and flip the momentum of the game.”

On the next play, defensive lineman James Cano broke through and dropped Auborne for a 2-yard loss. After an incomplete pass, Loftus stuffed Roman Bueche for no gain and Wylie had to settle for Spencer Gilbert’s 22-yard field goal.

“Coach is always talking about adversity and never give up,” Cano said. “There is always a way to stop them. That just gives the defense to turn it on and go and get it.”

Jamal Olford then took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. Fisher then took over, scoring on a 66-yard touchdown run and hitting Amarean Porter on a 35-yard scoring pass.

After that touchdown, East went for the onside kick and Michael Henderson recovered it. That set up Fisher’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Wyatt, and it was 28-3 before the first quarter was over.
