Awards

Three students in theDepartment of Health Behavior and Nutrition Scienceswere recognized at theDelaware Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics(DAND) annual conference on April 26 in Millsboro.

Erica Paisley, who’s enrolled in the4+1 Nutrition and Dietetics BS and Human Nutrition MS program, received the DAND Outstanding Dietetics Student Award. This award is given to a student of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics ACEND-accredited program in Delaware who has applied for admission to an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited dietetic internship or a graduate degree program in a nutrition-related field."I am extremelyhonored to have been chosen for the DAND Outstanding Dietetics Student Award,” Paisley said. "I am so glad that I have gotten the opportunity to study nutrition anddietetics at the University of Delaware, where I’ve expanded my knowledge and passion fornutrition. I can’t wait to use my education to help others live full and healthy lives.”

Elena Cogan, who’s also enrolled in the 4+1 Nutrition and Dietetics BS and Human Nutrition MS program, received the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Award for Outstanding Dietetics Student in a Didactic Program in Dietetics.“My passion for nutrition and dietetics stems from a preventative care approach to advocate for a healthful, balanced lifestyle that empowers food as medicine,” said Cogan.“When I wasnotified that I received the 2024 Outstanding Dietetics Student Award, I was shocked andhonored. This wasn’t an award I had applied for, so knowing that someone nominated memade me feel proud of all the work and experiences I’ve been involved in during the past fouryears here at the University of Delaware.”

Zoe Harper, a 2024 graduate of theDietetic Internshipprogram, was honored with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Outstanding Dietetics Student in a Dietetic Internship Award. This recognition is a testament to her emerging leadership and the remarkable achievements she has made in her ACEND-accredited dietetics education program. Winners will be recognized in theJournal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics."I can't wait to be a registered dietitian and teach the community aboutfood and how toaccess related resources to improve their nutrition and health,” Harper said.

Jennifer Graber, associate professor and associate dean of academic affairs and practice initiatives, was recipient of theAmerican Psychiatric Nurses Association(APNA) Award for Excellence in Education. This 2024 APNA Award recognizes a member demonstrating excellence in psychiatric-mental health nursing education, leadership, practice and more. Graber inspires students to follow in careers as psychiatric-mental health care nurses through innovative teaching strategies. Additionally, she has a variety of published research with presentations across the world to advance healthcare education. Graber will be recognized for her award at the 38th APNA Annual Conference, held Oct. 9-12 at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, Kentucky."Nursing education in psychiatric mental health has been my passion and I am honored and humbled to receive this prestigious award," said Graber.

Kaley Burgess, a second-year master’s student in athletic training, has received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA)Bobby Gunn Student Leadership Award, a prestigious recognition that marks a significant milestone for UD. This marks the first time a UD student has received the award in recorded history. Burgess, who graduates this spring, will be recognized atNATA’s 75th Conventionin June in New Orleans. Burgess has demonstrated exceptional dedication and hard work, balancing multiple leadership positions at the state, regional and national levels. Her contributions include serving as District 2 Representative on the NATA Student Leadership Committee, where she played an integral role in establishing the first Student Ambassador Program, which she currently chairs. Burgess also received the UD Athletic Training Program’sDr. Julie Moyer-Knowles and Keith Handling Scholarship awards. “I look forward to entering the workforce and playing a role in moving the athletic training profession forward,” said Burgess.
