In a TV rut? Here's one for your watchlist: FX's Justified, starring Timothy Olyphant as the fast-drawing, slow-talking, Stetson-wearing Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens from Kentucky. This summer's eight-episode limited series reboot, Justified: City Primeval, kicks off Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 10pm ET/PT on FX with a two-episode premiere, streaming next-day on Hulu. And if you haven't seen the original, you've got six seasons to catch up on!

Based on stories by the late American novelist Elmore Leonard, including Fire in the Hole (set in the Kentucky hollers) and City Primeval (set in Detroit), Justified is a modern western crime drama. Though violent (read: mature audiences only), the show is also at times laugh-out-loud funny, with a dry humor that holds true to Leonard's writing style.

Here's how to watch Justified, both the original and the reboot, Justified: City Primeval.

How to watch and stream Justified Seasons 1–6

The best place to stream Justified seasons one through six is Hulu, which starts at $7.99 a month (new subscribers can get the first month free with a free trial). Though you can watch Justified on other streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, it's not free — you'll pay $2.99 to buy an individual episode and around $10 to buy a single season.

Adapted from the novella Fire in the Hole, the original Justified series (2010-2015) follows Raylan's return to his home state of Kentucky. There, the lawman finds himself at odds with a blast from his past, the charismatic and irredeemable criminal Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), who once worked alongside Raylan in the coal mines. Also in the mix: Ava Crowder (Joelle Carter), who has long held a torch for Raylan and who also happens to be the self-made widow of Boyd's brother.

The Ava/Boyd saga concludes in the season six finale. The new limited series Justified: City Primeval, which is set 15 years later, features a storyline from an entirely different book with an almost completely different cast of characters. But here's why the original is still worth the watch before the new season: (1) Familiarize yourself with Raylan's backstory, including his complicated history with his ex-wife, Winona (Natalie Zea), and the birth of his daughter, Willa, whose character returns as a teen in the reboot. (2) Brush up on your favorite Raylan catchphrases. (3) The original series is too good to skip.

How to watch and stream Justified: City Primeval

The new FX limited series Justified: City Primeval premieres Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 10pm ET/PT, starting with the first two episodes, and will be available to stream next day on Hulu. New episodes will be released weekly.

If you have FX through a bundled live-stream service, such as Sling or Fubo, you should be all set to watch it live. New episodes will live-stream at the same time they air on cable (Tuesdays at 10pm ET/PT) and will be available on demand through the app the next day.

Here's the schedule for each episode's release on FX:

  • Episode 1: July 18, 2023, 10pm ET/PT
  • Episode 2: July 18, 2023, 11 pm ET/PT
  • Episode 3: July 25, 2023, 10pm ET/PT
  • Episode 4: August 1, 2023, 10pm ET/PT
  • Episode 5: August 8, 2023, 10pm ET/PT
  • Episode 6: August 15, 2023, 10pm ET/PT
  • Episode 7: August 22, 2023, 10pm ET/PT
  • Episode 8 (finale): August 29, 2023, 10pm ET/PT

Based on the book City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, the reboot lands Raylan (now 15 years older and wiser) in Detroit helping local law enforcement chase down the sociopathic Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), aka The Oklahoma Wildman. Raylan also meets his match in Clement's defense attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis). Avid fans of Leonard's books will know that the original story features a different lawman as the protagonist, but the character has been rewritten as Raylan for the TV series.

Olyphant reprises his starring role, while his real-life daughter Vivian Olyphant (one of three children the actor shares with his wife Alexis Knief) plays Raylan's now-teen daughter. The casting choice inspired some good-natured father-daughter competition on set, Olyphant shared in an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers in September 2022, shortly after production wrapped.
